Le persone del salone: la designer brasiliana Gisela Simas

Brasiliana, Donna (n.d.r.bellissima), Mamma, Moglie e Designer. La carriera di Gisela Simas, che si presenta alla Design Week 2018 esponendo alla Rio+Design presso Be Brasil, è una rivincita tutta al femminile. In the mood for design l’ha intervistata per voi.

Com’ è iniziata la tua carriera?

G: A 16 anni, disegnando abiti. Come ottava figlia i soldi per avere bei vestiti erano contati. Anni dopo, nel 1996, sposata e con due dei miei tre figli già nati, ho cambiato la moda con l’interior design, studiando al Club degli Arredatori a Rio de Janeiro prima, specializzandomi in interior design poi, realizzando progetti insieme a Caroline Simas, architetto e mia cognata. Nasce cosi un primo co-working che realizza diversi progetti per interni, e qualche primo mobile con legno di recupero, acquistato da imprese locali. Nel 2009, comincia la nuova sfida londinese, con la specializzazione in progettazione di prodotti e falegnameria alla Central Saint Martins (ndr: figli e marito non sono un ostacolo ma una forza, questo è il vero femminismo). Presentando il mio progetto finale, la risposta breve e potente del relatore: “sei pronta per il mercato”. Così ho deciso di aprire la mia azienda, Original Practical Design Limited e dedicarmi totalmente alla creazione.

Da dove provengono le tue ispirazioni?

G.: Persone e forme. Ho una storia che mostra bene questo processo: ero a San Paolo, in Brasile, all’aeroporto di Congonhas con mia madre. Guardando fuori dalla finestra noto una forma perfetta: la punta dell’ala di un Boeing. E’ stato amore a prima vista, ho detto a mia madre: “Disegnerò qualcosa con quella forma. Guarda, non è sorprendente?” Quel dettaglio mi ha trasmesso leggerezza e la vicinanza di un affetto cosi potente ha dato forza alla creazione. Schizzi a mano, Autocad e sughero lavorato hanno invece reso reale il lampadario Congonhas, che porto a Milano quest’anno insieme a Dora, un tavolino dalle linee innovative e morbide.

E invece i materiali?

G.: Il legno è il mio primo ed eterno amore. La mia connessione con questo materiale ha portato il mio sguardo ai design scandinavo e giapponese, leggero, puro e naturale.

Anche il carattere ecologico dei materiali mi interessa molto e le nuove tecnologie, permettono sempre più l’utilizzo di un altro materiale meraviglioso che proviene dalla natura ed è rispettoso dell’ambiente: il sughero.

..E la design week è il giusto posto per mostrare tutto questo?

G.: E’ la settimana che celebra l’amore per il design, lo mantiene vitale e mostra il suo impatto nella vita di ogni giorno. Design – oltre che funzione, bellezza e sensibilità – è vita, è gioia, emozione. Questo è quello che sento a Milano: energia positiva con un obiettivo comune, semplicemente potente!

Parliamo di direzioni. Dove mira il design oggi?

G.: La co-creazione. Quando cerco una fabbrica per produrre un pezzo, questa aggiunge molto al mio lavoro. Più possiamo cooperare ed essere utili alla comunità, più unificato sarà il mondo. So che la tendenza di oggi ci fa pensare il contrario. Il mondo è globalizzato. Il compito di riunire tutti è il futuro.

..e dove mira Gisela in futuro?

G.: Nel 2017, Original Practical Design Limited ha esposto alla Milano Design Week, alla Biennale di Design di Venezia, partecipato ad un’asta da Piasa a Parigi, organizzato una mostra durante il London Design Festival con Jader Almeida, partecipato per il secondo anno consecutivo al Design Museum Market nel nuovo museo del design di Londra. Per il 2018 l’obiettivo è aprire ulteriori mercati, dedicarci al post-vendita e creare prodotti innovativi! Ciò significa tempo, amore e una grande dedizione.

Brasiliana, Donna (n.d.r.bellissima), Mum, Wife and Designer. The career of Gisela Simas, which will be presented at the Design Week 2018 exhibition at Rio + Design at Be Brasil, is a feminine revenge. In the mood for design interviewed her for you guys.
How did your career start?
G: At 16 years old, drawing clothes. As the eighth daughter, the money to have good clothes was counted. Years later, in 1996, married and with two of my three children already born, I changed fashion with interior design. I studied at the Club of Interior Designers in Rio de Janeiro before, where I specialized in interior design. I created projects together with Caroline Simas , architect and my sister-in-law. A partnership was born, which created several projects for interiors, and some first furniture with recycled wood, purchased from local companies. In 2009, the new London challenge began, with the specialization in product design and carpentry at Central Saint Martins (editor’s note: children and husband are not an obstacle but a force, this is true feminism). Presenting my final project, the short and powerful answer of the speaker: “you are ready for the market”. So I decided to open my company, Original Practical Design Limited and dedicate myself totally to the creation.

Where do your inspirations come from?
G .: People and forms. I have a story that shows this process well: I was in Sao Paulo, Brazil, at Congonhas airport with my mother. Looking out the window I noticed a perfect shape: the tip of the wing of a Boeing. It was love at first sight, I told my mother, “I’ll draw something with that shape. Look, isn’t it amazing?” That detail gave me lightness and the proximity of such a powerful affection, it gave me strength to come up with the creation. Sketches by hand, Autocad and cork worked have made the Congonhas chandelier real, which I bring to Milan this year together with Dora, and also a coffee table with innovative and soft lines.

And instead the materials?
G .: Wood is my first and eternal love. My connection with this material has brought my gaze to Scandinavian and Japanese design, light, pure and natural.

Also the ecological character of the materials interests me a lot and the new technologies allow more and more the use of another wonderful material that comes from nature and is environmentally friendly: cork.

.. And is design week the right place to show all this?
G .: It is the week that celebrates the love for design, keeps it vital and shows its impact in everyday life. Design – as well as function, beauty and sensitivity – is life, it is joy, emotion. This is what I feel in Milan: positive energy with a common goal, simply powerful!
Let’s talk about directions. Where does design target today?
G .: Co-creation. When I look for a factory to produce a piece, it adds a lot to my work. The more we can cooperate and be useful to the community, the more unified the world will be. I know that today’s trend makes us think otherwise. The world is globalized. The task of bringing everyone together is the future.

..and where does Gisela aim in the future?
G .: In 2017, Original Practical Design Limited exhibited at the Milan Design Week, at the Venice Design Biennale, participated in an auction from Piasa in Paris, organized an exhibition during the London Design Festival with Jader Almeida, participated for the second consecutive year at the Design Museum Market in the new design museum in London. For 2018 the goal is to open up further markets, dedicate ourselves to after-sales and create innovative products! This means time, love and a great dedication.
